Reconnecting with nature
In this issue, we delve into the remote. Remote communities. Remote islands. Remote lands. We explore that divine sense of perspective you only get from visiting places few others have been to.
We cruise to the most distant places on Earth, from the Arctic to Antarctica, but almost 130 years at sea has taught us that the feeling of adventure you get from stepping off the beaten path is about more than simply visiting faraway places. It’s also about connecting with them.
There are many ways to experience the extraordinary, from sailing routes that were virtually unnavigable until recently to meeting people whose way of life is more different from yours than you can possibly imagine. The Inuit of the Northwest Passage and the people living in Ittoqqortoormiit – east Greenland’s most isolated town – come to mind as examples. You can encounter both with us.
Over the following pages, we visit the Torngat Mountains at the tip of Canada’s Newfoundland and Labrador – a wild place of ghost towns and polar bears. We hike the trails that lace the least-visited of Cape Verde’s nine inhabited islands, and find out why wind is so important to life on the Faroe Islands.
The grit and determination needed to spend your life in relative isolation is exemplified in the stories of Abby Goodall’s settler family in south Argentina. We discover why it’s essential to maintain the inaccessibility of the Maya Forest in Belize, while our pick of five remote cabins will inspire you to live in seclusion.
On the surface, all these stories are, indeed, about isolation. But dig a little deeper and you see that experiencing remote places can be as much about seeking connection as it is about leaving the rest of the world behind.
Perhaps the desire to stay in a far-off cabin boils down to a need to connect (or reconnect) with nature, yourself or your travel companions.
And that’s what makes our expedition cruises so unique. We connect you with people, places and knowledge that you would never otherwise have the opportunity to encounter, as sustainably as possible.
Yes, we take you to far-flung places, such as Svalbard beyond the 80th Parallel North, the wildlife-packed Galápagos, and the Bissagos Islands where the local people maintain their ancestral traditions and a nature-based way of life. But more than that, our cruises offer you the chance to connect with these seemingly inaccessible places more deeply and meaningfully.
The more you think about it, the more you realise it’s the most isolated places that foster the strongest connections. Perhaps that’s why so many of us yearn to go beyond the horizon – to carry on exploring, seeking and – ultimately – to connect with nature.
